America’s top dog is a survivor.

American Humane hosted the Hero Dog Awards gala at Eau Palm Beach Resort on Friday night.

The contest started with 400 heroic dogs from across the country. After a million votes nationwide, the seven finalists came to Manalapan to be in the spotlight.

“We’re here to celebrate American heroes, heroes on both ends of the leash,” said Robin Ganzert of American Humane. “These are amazing working dogs who really saved lives and inspired us to do better by humanity. It’s amazing that we’re here to celebrate these special dogs.”

The dogs strolled the red carpet along with a number of celebrities.

Singer Lisa Loeb and actress Vivica Fox attended the gala, along with legendary singer Naomi Judd, all to honor America’s most courageous canine.

The winner is Boone, a hound mix from Pennsylvania who survived heartbreaking cruelty as a puppy that cost him his legs.

His adopted family made him a wheelchair to get around. Now he works as a therapy dog for children. And his organization helps build prosthetics for other dogs like him.

One of the dogs in attendance is named Little Man. He’s a pit bull and not so little. But he also had a story of courage.

Handler Molly Gibb said firefighters found him as a tiny puppy in a pile of rubble after a tornado hit in Oklahoma. She eventually adopted him. He’s now a search and rescue dog.
