After a Henrico County resident reported a stray cat that “refused to” leave their porch to the local police’s animal protection unit on Tuesday, Piper, the cat long believed to be dead, made her way back to her owner in Virginia.
In response to the complaint, a police officer took the cat and returned her to the county shelter, where she was checked for a microchip. Beyond the miracle that the white-gloved cat was still alive when discovered after almost a decade, it was fortunate that she had been RFID-tagged, allowing authorities to search for her in the database of permanent identification.
“The owner finally marked her as deceased with the microchip company after spending so much time looking for her. Piper, however, had other ideas,” the police force stated in a press release.
After making some calls and receiving assistance from some nearby veterinarians, the animal control officer was able to locate the owner.
Microchipped cat helped police to rescue her
The woman initially found it difficult to believe, but later acknowledged Piper had been missing for nine years and expressed excitement at the information, according to the police. “The lesson here is that microchips assist in reuniting lost pets with their owners. Keep your contact information up to date and microchip your pet,” the police department stated in a post on Instagram.
What is microchipping?
Microchipping in pets involves the insertion of a tiny electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the skin of an animal. The chip contains a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner.
The process of microchipping is quick, easy, and relatively painless for the animal, similar to getting a routine vaccination.
