Illinoisans will be happy to know that their largest city (and the country’s third largest) is the best place in the U.S. for dog lovers.

In a new study from Protect My Paws, Chicago came in fifth overall behind Paris, Buenos Aires, Bern, Switzerland and Havana, Cuba for best cities for dog lovers across the globe. U.S. cities coming in under “Chi-town” in the listing are Philadelphia, Houston and New York City.

Chicago also came in at No. 8 for its dog to human ratio. For every 100 people there are 22.2 dogs in the Windy City. The top U.S. city in this category was Houston with 52.1 dogs for every 100 people. Also on the list are San Diego (36 per 100), San Francisco (26.5 per 100), Denver (22.1 per 100) and Philadelphia (21.8 per 100).

All of the international cities in the Top 10 “per person” category have more than 21 dogs per 100 people. Overall, 55.6% of the cities in the study have a ratio of fewer than 10 dogs per 100 humans. This may be concerning for dog lovers given that additional information points out that the U.S. cat population is rising faster than dogs.
