A dog saved her owner after he injured his leg at their home in rural Washington state, fell, and was unable to get up for hours. According to authorities, the dog walked to a nearby road, sat in the middle of it until a local sheriff’s deputy stopped, and then led the officer back to her owner.

Gita’s bravery and instinct during her 84-year-old owner’s moment of need, following his injury at their cabin on September 25, ultimately “saved his life that day,” according to a statement from the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office.

“The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us,” the agency remarked.

Gita, 13, was found sitting in the middle of the road when a Stevens County deputy first encountered her. The deputy attempted to coax her into his patrol cruiser to search for her owner, but she refused to get in.

After leaving Gita where she was, the deputy checked nearby homes but couldn’t locate her owner. Concerned that something was wrong, he returned to the dog and found her lying on the centerline of the road.

When the deputy tried to guide her off the roadway to avoid traffic, Gita took off down a lightly traveled, unmarked path. The deputy followed her, and she eventually led him to a small summer cabin.

As he approached, the deputy heard an elderly man calling for help from just beyond the cabin. The man had medical conditions that required specific medications, which he hadn’t been able to take after falling and injuring his leg several hours earlier.

“He may have faced serious consequences if he hadn’t been found,” the sheriff’s office stated.

While the agency did not disclose how Gita’s owner was treated or where he was taken, they described Gita as the “rescue dog and best friend of the gentleman in trouble,” explicitly crediting her with “saving his life that day.”

Stories of dogs helping their owners receive life-saving assistance from first responders continue to captivate the public.

Gita’s moment in the spotlight came about four months after another dog ran four miles to get help for his owner, who had crashed his car into a ravine in Oregon. That owner was eventually rescued.

In January, a man who fell through the ice on a frozen lake in Michigan was saved when his dog retrieved rescue equipment at the request of a state police officer, who then pulled the man to safety.
