Benelli, a dedicated RCMP service dog in Penticton, had an important message to share on Saturday — especially for keeping fellow four-legged friends safe during the hot Okanagan summer.
“It’s really hot right now in the Okanagan, and we need to make sure all my furry friends stay safe — especially when it comes to parked cars,” said the South Okanagan Similkameen Community Policing team on Benelli’s behalf.
How to Keep Us Safe in the Heat
- Leave us at home when running errands — we’ll be cooler and safer.
- Walk us in the early morning or late evening to protect our paws from hot pavement.
- Always carry water — we get thirsty too!
- Check the pavement: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for our paws.
- Never leave us in a parked car — not even for a minute.
What to Do If You See a Dog Left in a Hot Car
- Call 911 immediately — this is an emergency.
- Note the vehicle’s make, model, license plate, and exact location.
- Ask nearby businesses to page the vehicle owner.
- Stay with the dog until help arrives — your actions could save a life.
- Watch for signs of heat distress: heavy panting, drooling, confusion, collapse — these require urgent help.
- Do not break a window yourself — only trained professionals are legally allowed to do that.
If a Dog Is Rescued Before Help Arrives
- Move them to shade or an air-conditioned space.
- Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water.
- Use wet towels on their paws, belly, and underarms to cool them gently.
- Avoid using ice or freezing water — it can cause shock.
- Contact a veterinarian right away or ask emergency responders to arrange vet care.
“I may be trained to help others… but I still need your help to keep pups like me safe,” Benelli reminded everyone.
Let’s all do our part to make sure summer is safe — and enjoyable — for our furry companions.
